About Vietnam Academy of Performing Arts

“I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life – and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.”

Community-based art in Hoi An

Vietnam Academy of Performing Arts (VAPA) is a community-based arts organisation. In short, our work is about building a happier community, and empowering people to grow.

To explain further, VAPA was the first organisation of its kind in Hoi An, and remains the only arts organisation whose primary focus is to help people develop soft skills.

Our mission embodies the belief that the arts are transformative. In other words, we believe the arts provide a platform upon which communities can be elevated.

“Life without the collective resources of our libraries, museums, theatres and galleries, or without the personal expression of literature, music and art, would be static and sterile – no creative arguments about the past, no diverse and stimulating present, and no dreams of the future.”

Arts Council England (2014)

The value of an arts education extends far beyond simply learning how to sing, dance, draw or act. That is to say that the arts inspire hope, drive change and breed tolerance, empathy and compassion. For that reason, communities that actively engage with the arts are stronger, and that is our hope for Hoi An.
